5. What do you think a tale book is?
Ans: A tale book is a digitalized book that can be read on the television or computer screen.

(iii) What is it contrasted with?
Ans: It’, i.e. the human teacher of today is contrasted with the mechanical robotic teachers that are the order of the day during Tommy and Margie’s time in the year 2157.

III. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (30 words).

1. What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?
Ans: Tommy and Margie had mechanical teachers that were programmed specifically according to their mental capabilities They had screens that displayed lessons and questions and slots for students to insert their homework in.

2. Why did Margie’s mother send for the County Inspector?
Ans: Margie’s mechanical teacher had been giving her test after test in geography and she had been performing poorly in them. This led Margie’s mother to send for the County Inspector so he could check the reason.

3. What did he do?
Ans: The County Inspector, smiled at Margie and gave her an apple. Then using his box of tools, he took Margie’s teacher apart, adjusted the settings for the geography sector, and put him together again.

4. Why was Margie doing badly in geography? What did the County Inspector do to help her?
Ans: The geography sector of her teacher was programmed faster and in more advanced settings than Margie could comprehend. So he kept giving her tough tests. As a result, she failed to keep up and did badly in geography.

The County Inspector corrected the programming and set the pace of the geography section to a level more suitable for Margie’s age.

5. What had once happened to Tommy’s teacher?
Ans: Tommy’s teacher had once suffered from some kind of possible programming error and the entire history section had blanked out. So the mechanical teacher was taken away for a whole month and repairs were made on him.

6. Did Margie have regular days and hours for school? If So, why?
Ans: Yes, Margie had regular days and hours for school because her mother believed that little girls like Margie learnt better if they studied at regular hours.

7. How does Tommy describe the old kind of school?
Ans: Tommy describes the old kind of school as one existing centuries ago, where children from different houses got together in a building called ‘school’ to be taught by a man, who gave them homework and asked questions. For Margie and Tommy, this was different from what they were used to and they find it very strange.

8. How does he describe the old kind of teachers?
Ans: Tommy describes the old kind of teachers as not regular teachers for him a regular teacher was a mechanical robot. He thus finds it abnormal that the old teachers were humans. He explains to Margie that they were men who taught the boys and girls, asked questions and also gave homework.

IV. Answer each of these questions in two or three paragraphs (100-150 words).

1. What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?
Ans: The main features of the mechanical teachers and schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story are: Firstly, the schoolrooms were not actual schools unlike in the present day, but just a room in the house which was meant for the purpose of study only. Secondly, each child studied separately in his/her own home and each had his/her own personal teacher. Thirdly, the teachers were not humans but rather robots, who were adjusted specifically to meet the intellectual needs of the child. And lastly, the mechanical teachers both taught and evaluated their student’s performance.

2. Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?
Ans: Margie hated school because like most children she thought it was worthless and studying was of no use to her. She did not like studying or having to do homework on a regular basis. Moreover of late, her teacher had been testing her geography

knowledge every day and she had been securing very poor grades. This made Margie hate school all the more.

Margie thought that the schools of the past were fun because being taught by a man seemed more fun than her own mechanical teacher. Moreover, Tommy had told her that in the old kind of school, children from different houses got together in a building called the ‘school’ to study. This seemed like a fascinating idea to her, especially the probability of playing with those other children, sitting together in the classroom, learning the same things together and more importantly, having someone to share the burden of homework. The thought of getting I spend the whole day with other children made Margie contemplate that the old kind of school must have been fun.

3. Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans. Yes, I agree with Margie. Schools today are more fun than the school in the story because, unlike Margie who studies in the room of her house itself, we get to travel every day as we come to school. Also unlike the schools in the story, our present-day schools give us an opportunity to take part in various extracurricular activities and do different things. We get to play games, visit the library, take part in competitions, act in various school plays etc.

Moreover, we also get to meet other children and make lots of friends. And most importantly, I believe a mechanical teacher can never replace a human one, because it will lack the love, understanding, compassion and overall humane touch that is displayed by our teachers of the present day.

Thinking about Language

I. Adverbs

Read the sentence taken from the story:

They had once taken Tommy’s teacher away for nearly a month because the history sector had blanked out completely. The word complete is an adjective. When you add-ly to it, it becomes an adverb.

1. Find the sentences in the lesson which have the adverbs given in the box below.

Awfully sorrowfully completely loftily Carefully differently quickly Nonchalantly

Ans: They turned the pages, which were yellow and crinkly, and it was awfully funny to read words that stood still instead of moving the way they were supposed to-on a screen, you know.

The mechanical teacher had been giving her test after test in geography and she had been doing worse and worse until her mother had shaken her head sorrowfully and sent for the County Inspector.

They had once taken Tommy’s teacher away for nearly a month because the history sector had blanked out completely.

He added loftily, pronouncing the word carefully, “Centuries ago.

But my mother says a teacher has to be adjusted to fit the mind of each boy and girl it teaches and that each kid has to be taught differently.

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it,” Margie said quickly. “Maybe”, he said nonchalantly.

2. Now use these adverbs to fill in the blanks in the sentences below.
(i) The report must be read ____so that performance can be improved.

Ans: The report must be read carefully so that performance can be improved.

(ii) At the interview, Sameer answered our questions ____, shrugging his shoulders.
Ans: At the interview, Sameer answered our questions. nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders.

(iii) We all behave ____ when we are tired or hungry.
Ans: We all behave differently when we are tired or hungry.

(iv) The teacher shook her head ____when Ravi lied to her.
Ans: The teacher shook her head sorrowfully when Ravi lied to her.

(v) I____ forgot about it.
Ans: I completely forgot about it.

(vi) When I complimented Revathi on her success, she just smiled____ and turned away.
Ans: When I complimented Revathi on her success, she just smiled loftily and turned away

(vii) The President of the Company is ____ busy and will not be able to meet you.
Ans: The President of the Company is awfully busy and will not be able to meet you.

(viii) I finished my work ____ so that I could go out to play.
Ans: I finished my work quickly so that I could go out to play.

Remember: An adverb describes the action. You can form adverbs by adding-ly to adjectives.
Spelling Note: When an adjective ends in -y, the y changes to I when you add-ly to form an adverb. For example, angr-y → angry-i-ly

3. Make adverbs from these Adjectives.

(i) angry ____
Ans: angry – angrily

(ii) happy ____
Ans: Happy – happily

(iii) Merry ____
Ans: Merry – merrily

(iv) sleepy ____
Ans: sleepy – sleepily

(v) easy ____
Ans: easy – easily

(vi) noisy ____
Ans: noisy – noisily.

(vii) tidy ____
Ans: tidy – tidily

(viii) gloomy ____
Ans: gloomy – gloomily

II. If Not and Unless

  • Imagine that Margie’s mother told her, “You’ll feel awful if you don’t finish your history lesson.”
  • She could also say: “You’ll feel awful unless you finish your history lesson.

”Unless means if not. Sentences with unless or if not are negative conditional sentences.

Notice that these sentences have two parts. The part that begins with if not or unless tells us the condition. This part has a verb in the present tense (look at the verbs don’t finish, finish in the sentences above).

The other part of the sentence tells us about a possible result. It tells us what will happen (if something else doesn’t happen). The verb in this part of the sentence is in the future tense (you’ll feel you will feel).

Notice these two tenses again in the following examples.

Future TensePresent Tense
There won’t be any books leftunlesswe preserve them.
You won’t learn your lessonsifif you don’t study regularly.
Tommy will have an accidentunlesshe drives more slowly.

1. If I don’t go to Anu’s party tonight, ____
2. If you don’t telephone the hotel to order food, ____
3. Unless you promise to write back, I ____
4. If she doesn’t play any games, ____
5. Unless that little bird flies away quickly, the cat. ____

Ans: 1. If I don’t go to Anu’s party tonight, she will feel bad.
2. If you don’t telephone the hotel to order food, we will have to go to bed hungry.
3. Unless you promise to write back, I will keep pestering you.
4. If she doesn’t play any games, she will miss out on being with her friends.
5. Unless that little bird flies away quickly, the cat will catch it.

Additional Question Answer

1. In which century does the story “The Fun They Had’ take place?
Ans: In the 22nd century.

2. Where had Tommy found the book?
Ans: Tommy had found the book in the attic, in his house.

3. Describe the Country Inspector.
Ans: The Country Inspector was a round little man, probably short and plumpy, with a red face. He carried a box of tools that had deals and wires.

4. Why was Margie disappointed with the Inspector?
Ans: Margie was disappointed because the Inspector repaired her teacher at home itself and did not take the teacher away for repairs as she had hoped.

5. Is it possible to look far ahead into the future and make s reasonably correct assumption of what it will be like? Support your answer with examples from the story which was written in 1951.
Ans: The speed at which technology is advancing makes it almost impossible to imagine what facilities will be available to man a couple of hundred years from now. Issac Asimov wrote this science fiction

about sixty years ago, and he mentions the use of punch cards in the 22nd century when they are not being used even today. Our imagination is restricted by the knowledge of technology as we know it today, so it is difficult to assume what the future, hundreds of years from now will be like.

In reference to the context

1. “I hate school.”
(a) Who says these words?

Ans: The speaker of the above-quoted sentence is Margie.

(b) Why did the speaker hate school?
Ans: The speaker, Margie, hated school like most children. Recently she had started hating her school even more because her mechanical teacher had been giving her test after test in geography and she had been doing worse repeatedly.

2. “Why would anyone write about school ?”
(a) Who says these words? To whom?

Ans: Margie is the speaker. She says the above-quoted line to Tommy.

(b) What reply did the speaker get?
Ans: Tommy called Margie ‘stupid’ for asking and replied in a superior way that someone had written about school because it was not the usual kind of school that he and Margie were accustomed to. It was an old kind of school that existed centuries ago.

3. “Well, I don’t know what kind of school they had all that time ago.”
(a) Who is the ‘they’ mentioned here?

Ans: “They” in the above-quoted sentence refers to the children who existed many centuries before Tommy and Margie, and studied in ‘old’ kind of schools.

(b) What kind of school did ‘they’ have?
Ans: The children who lived centuries ago had a school very different from the ones Margie and Tommy attended. Unlike them, the children all assembled in a special building where they were divided according to their age groups and taught by human teachers.

(c) Who is the speaker of the above sentence? What kind of school does the speaker have?
Ans: The speaker of the above-quoted sentence is Margie.

Margie’s school was a room in her home where she was taught by a private mechanical teacher.
